Defense Tech Monthly August 2026

Inside the August 2026 edition:

Runway Pressure — between August 15 and 24, Ukraine hit at least six Russian military airfields, destroying jets, an Orion UAV, and 18 UAV storage facilities in a widening campaign against Russia’s aviation network.

Windows of Control — Russia’s Rassvet satellite network isn’t a “Russian Starlink” yet, but Kyiv says Moscow plans to scale it to 292 satellites by 2027 and 924 by 2035.

Reactive Gerans — Russia retires the Geran-3 for a faster, purpose-built Geran-4 capable of hitting roughly 500 km/h, shrinking Ukraine’s reaction window.

A New Ballistic Threat — North Korea’s heavier KN-30 joins Russia’s arsenal alongside the KN-23 and KN-24, deepening Moscow’s dependence on Pyongyang’s missile supply chain.

The Interceptor Gap — Russia fired a record 198 ballistic missiles at Ukraine in July alone — nearly quadrupling its monthly launches since April — just as Patriot batteries run short on PAC-3 interceptors.

Training the Algorithms — Ukraine opens its Avengers Labs platform, letting defense companies train their own AI models on more than five million collected battlefield frames.

Russian Personnel Losses — unmanned systems’ share of Russia’s drone-inflicted losses climbed from 31.7% in January to 38.4% in July, even as Moscow’s own contract-recruitment machine starts to show cracks.
